Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra: should you wait, or buy an Ultra now?

Samsung has not announced the Galaxy S27 Ultra. There is no event date, no confirmed specification sheet and no price. Reporting points to an announcement in January or February 2027, and shops may not have stock until March.

So the question is not old Ultra against new Ultra. It is whether five months of waiting buys you a better phone than the Galaxy Ultras you can order today, professionally checked, cleaned and reconditioned, and hardly distinguishable from new. For anyone whose phone is already struggling, the answer on refurbed is usually no.

Confirmed by Samsung: nothing. No launch event, no specification sheet, no pricing.

Timing. Reporting points to an announcement in January or February 2027, in line with Samsung's usual early-year pattern. Retail availability could extend into March, so a five month wait can quietly become six.

Battery. Two separate reports circulate and they disagree. One rumour dossier summarises roughly 5,200 to 5,500 mAh. Separate reporting discusses roughly 5,700 mAh using silicon-carbon chemistry. Blending those into a single range would hide the disagreement rather than settle it.

Cameras. Reports broadly agree the dedicated 3x module could go, and disagree on which sensors would replace it.

Processor. Whether every market gets the same chip is unresolved, so buyers would need to check the exact local model code.

Price. No reliable figure exists.

One caution worth carrying through the rest of the page: twenty articles repeating one leaker is not twenty sources. Count the origins, not the headlines.

One number frames the whole battery argument. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy S26 Ultra all ship a 5,000 mAh cell. Three generations, no change in capacity, so any increase would be news.

Silicon-carbon chemistry can fit more energy into the same space, which makes the reported capacities plausible. A capacity figure is still a chemistry claim, not a day of use. Before it counts, someone has to measure runtime across a normal mixed day, temperature while the phone charges and while it films, how performance holds at 15% charge, and how fast capacity fades over a year of cycles.

Picture a 6am flight, a full day of navigation and photos, and no charger until the evening. That day is the test that matters, and no rumour answers it.

Android flagships with larger silicon-carbon cells are already on sale, so waiting for Samsung is not the only route to longer endurance. On refurbed, battery condition is graded before a phone is resold, so you know what you are getting.

All three current Ultras pair a 200 MP main camera with a 10 MP telephoto. The Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy S26 Ultra add a 50 MP ultra-wide, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra carries a 12 MP ultra-wide alongside its 50 MP periscope telephoto.

Reporting suggests the S27 Ultra could drop the dedicated 3x module and run three rear cameras instead of four. Lens count is the wrong thing to watch. A redesigned system built around a stronger main sensor can produce cleaner results between 2x and 4x than a small dedicated module ever managed. It can also fall back to a noisy crop and lose detail on anything that moves.

When retail units get reviewed, look for the same subject at 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x and 5x, portraits of a child or a dog who will not hold still, an indoor party in poor light, and whether video shifts colour the moment it switches lens.

Removing a weak camera can make photographs better or worse. Only the photographs decide.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy S25 Ultra both ship with the stylus stored in the body. What the pen does has changed, and the change catches people out.

Samsung's own support documentation states that Air Actions are unavailable on the Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy S26 Ultra S Pens. The remote camera shutter and the mid-air gestures are gone on those two generations. Writing, drawing, hover, selection and screen-off notes all still work, and the pen needs no charging and no pairing.

Two things follow, and both matter when you shop refurbished. Do not reject a working S25 or S26 Ultra because its pen will not trigger the camera: that generation never did it. And if the remote shutter is the feature you rely on, on a tripod or across a room, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is the generation that still has it.

Nothing confirms the S27 Ultra brings it back.

Waiting feels free. Price these six items before you decide.

Reliability. A repair or a stopgap handset if your current phone fails before spring 2027.

Trade-in decay. Your old phone loses value across five or six months of waiting.

Expiring offers. Refurbished Ultra prices move with stock, and the listing you like today may not be there in March.

Launch premium. A brand-new flagship costs most in its opening months, and the storage upsell lands on top of that price.

Accessories. Cases, mounts, chargers and screen protectors, if the design changes.

The review gap. An announcement is not availability, and availability is not trustworthy testing of retail units. Add weeks to each step.

Waiting is inexpensive on one condition: your current phone stays dependable, and you are not giving up a strong offer on refurbed in order to sit still.

Get the Galaxy S24 Ultra if you want the lowest entry price into the Ultra line, and especially if you use the S Pen as a remote camera shutter. It is the heaviest of the three at 232 g, the screen is 6.8 inches rather than 6.9, and it runs the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Get the Galaxy S25 Ultra if you want the balance pick. You get the 6.9 inch screen, the Snapdragon 8 Elite, the 50 MP ultra-wide the S24 Ultra does without, and 219 g instead of 232 g.

Get the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want the newest chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, and the lightest body of the three at 214 g.

Wait only if your phone is healthy into 2027 and one specific problem, named and measured, would be fixed by a change nobody has confirmed.
