Meet the iPhone Duo: Apple's First Foldable, But It Isn't the Most Affordable Way In

Apple announced its first foldable phone on September 9, 2026: the iPhone Duo. Samsung shipped its first foldable seven years earlier, and Google and Honor followed years ago too. So the Duo isn't launching a category. It's joining one that's already expanding and, for a growing number of buyers, fashionable.

Apple's own framing is bold: hardware chief John Ternus described the Duo as the biggest change to the iPhone since the original device launched. Closed, it's 11.3 mm thick. Opened flat, it's 5.2 mm, thin enough that Apple calls it the thinnest iPhone ever made, though not the thinnest foldable on the market.

Apple builds the Duo's inner display from ten ultrathin layers, with a nano-texture finish written pixel by pixel using maskless laser lithography, the same idea as a matte screen taken to an extreme. Between the layers, optically clear viscoelastic adhesives let the panel glide as it folds. Apple's own materials describe this as minimizing the crease, not eliminating it, a deliberate choice of word.

The Verge's hands-on found the crease nearly impossible to feel by touch, on a matte screen that resisted glare well and folded smoothly, easing shut rather than snapping. MacRumors reached a slightly softer verdict: the crease stays visible in some lighting, though less prominent than on Samsung's own foldables. Reader reaction on both hands-on articles leaned strongly positive, with top-voted comments praising the crease engineering for a first attempt.

A titanium plate, high-strength glass and a custom polymer cover, 40% stiffer than typical industry materials, back up the display, alongside Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back. A 12 MP camera now sits under the inner screen, invisible until the display darkens.

Neither outlet has used the Duo beyond a single launch-day session, so how the crease holds up after months of folding is still unknown.

The Duo runs the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro: a 2 nanometer design with a 6 core CPU, a 7 core GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and a dual 16 core Neural Engine, with 50% more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro. What's different is how Apple cools it.

A custom vapor chamber, in a chip package Apple says is inspired by its M-series laptop silicon, connects directly to the A20 Pro. Apple claims up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, the kind of gain that shows up in a long gaming session or a video export, not a benchmark spike. The new Apple C2 modem adds mmWave 5G in the US on top of sub-6GHz coverage and uses 15% less energy than its predecessor, while the same Apple-designed N1 chip runs Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread and a second-generation Ultra Wideband radio.

Apple's current flagship keeps Face ID, a variable aperture camera and more colour choice than this. The Duo trades several of those away to fold in half:

Face ID: replaced by Touch ID, a fingerprint sensor built into the side button.

Camera: no dedicated telephoto lens. The 2x zoom is a 12 MP crop from the 48 MP main camera, and the aperture is fixed at f/1.6 rather than variable.

Apple leans on software to close some of that gap. Smart Take uses on-device AI on the A20 Pro to watch the scene and fire the shutter automatically once everyone is posing, so nobody has to sprint back into frame before a timer runs out. Duo Preview mirrors a live feed onto the outer screen so the subject can check their own framing, and Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations on that same outer screen to pull a child's eyes toward the lens. A nearby friend can join a call through Duo FaceTime using the outer display and camera, and Dual Capture streams the front and rear cameras into the same FaceTime call at once. None of that replaces a telephoto lens, but it's a different kind of camera upgrade than a spec sheet captures.

Samsung Display is the Duo's exclusive foldable OLED supplier, reportedly locked in for up to three years. Apple builds the hinge, the adhesive stack, the titanium plate and the nano-texture coating around that panel, so this isn't a Galaxy screen with an Apple logo bolted on. But the part that makes the phone fold at all comes from one supplier, in one country.

Memory adds a second dependency: Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are major suppliers of the DRAM and NAND that go into every iPhone, and memory has become one of the largest drivers of rising iPhone build costs. Samsung Display itself kept moving while Apple was still designing the Duo: in July 2026 it unveiled a Flex Titanium structure that pairs ultra-thin glass with a titanium-alloy film and a titanium plate beneath the OLED panel, the same durability idea Apple ended up building into the Duo, developed by the very company supplying Apple's screen.

None of this has slowed Apple's pricing power elsewhere. Counterpoint Research found Apple's premium smartphone sales still grew 9% in the first half of 2026 despite repeated price rises. As one Korean telecom industry official framed it for the Korea Herald, Samsung has already spent seven years proving a foldable can work, so the real question is why Apple's costs $1,999 to start.

The Duo's materials tell a related story. Apple says it's built with 35% recycled content overall, including 100% recycled cobalt in the battery and 100% recycled titanium in the 3D-printed hinge cover, manufactured using 60% renewable energy across the supply chain. Solid figures on their own, sitting inside a device whose single hardest-to-replace part still comes from one supplier, in one country.

iOS 27 gives the Duo three device orientations: flat (landscape), closed (portrait) and half-folded (standing), and it shifts on-screen content away from the crease automatically in each one. Split View puts two apps side by side, each locked to one fixed half, including two windows of the same app. Lock Screen controls, the Dock and app navigation all shift to the side of the display too, freeing up vertical space on a screen that's already unusually tall.

Stand the Duo up half-folded without plugging it in, and StandBy turns it into a bedside display, now with Calendar and Weather faces alongside the existing Clock and Modular faces, plus a new glow alarm clock. The Photos face can cycle through a shared album instead of just your own camera roll.

Siri AI starts rolling out in beta from September 14, gaining a Camera mode that can see what you're pointing at and act on it. Apple Intelligence adds a few Duo-specific tools too: Spatial Reframing and Extend for photos, an upgraded Clean Up, and an Image Playground update with more photorealistic output carrying SynthID watermarking. Netflix, Zoom, Slack and Detail are already built for the fold at launch.

A few real specs are still missing. Apple never discloses battery capacity in mAh for any iPhone, the Duo included, only video-playback hours: up to 31 hours on the inner display, 44 on the outer, 24 with typical mixed use. Those figures come from Apple's own preproduction testing in July and August 2026 against what Apple calls a representative usage profile, not an independent test, so real mixed-use battery life could land anywhere around that number.

Long-term crease durability is untested beyond a single hands-on session, and foldable creases are known to become more visible after repeated folding over three to six months, the window most independent reviewers will test once units are in hand. Apple Pencil support is confirmed but arrives later this year without an exact date, and no teardown has been published yet to confirm what's inside.

Apple's case for the Duo rests on engineering: a chip built to stay cool while folded, a display stack designed to hide its own seam, camera software that compensates for a missing telephoto lens, and a hinge built around a screen only Samsung Display can supply. That engineering case doesn't automatically make the Duo the better buy over an established rival, especially once Touch ID, a fixed aperture and a locked-half multitasking view enter the picture.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5, Honor Magic V3 and Google Pixel Fold above have all been through several years of the same bet Apple is only now making, and all three are available refurbished for well below the Duo's €2,319 starting price. If it's the fold itself you want, rather than the Apple badge on the back, one of those three gets you there sooner and for less.
