This is an Ernie Ball MusicMan SUB 1 Guitar in Textured Cinnamon finish. Made in the USA in 2004, the SUB line of instruments was available between ‘03 & ‘06, and was positioned as an affordable alternative to the popular Silhouette model. Still being made at the San Luis factory, the build quality of the SUB line was of course fantastic, so savings were made elsewhere to keep the pricetag low. This included the Textured finish which removed the need for extensive polishing and more cost effective hardware choices. The result was a quality USA made MusicMan for less than $1000.

Of course featuring a bolt-on construction, this instrument comprises a Poplar body, Maple neck and 22 fret Rosewood fingerboard. Chrome hardware is fitted including a 6-saddle hardtail bridge & sealed tuning machines. A pair of MusicMan Custom passive humbucking pickups are installed in the Aluminium Diamond Plate pickguard, and are wired to a 3-way toggle switch, master volume & master tone controls.

The Maple neck plays very well, with a profile which might be described as a ‘C’ shape. This provides a smooth & responsive playing experience across the register, with easy reach in all fingerboard positions. The double cutaway body design with lightly sculpted heel ensures unrestricted access to the upper frets. The Rosewood of the fretboard is pleasant under the fingers, and with it’s 10” radius is practical for a wide range of playing styles & techniques.

The pair of MusicMan Custom humbucking pickups deliver thick & full bodied tones, perfect for anyting from blues to rock & metal. The neck is round and plenty powerful enough to drive your lead lines & solos to the front of the mix. The bridge is of course brighter, and saturates into a crushing distortion when driving the amp. The controls are kept simple but still offer comprehensive control of your tone. An interesting & well equipped instrument which still holds up to what Ernie Ball set out to achieve 23 years ago.
