Taco Violin Bass 1960s GDR - Description

Mid 1960s Taco bass visually inspired by Hofners violin bass - very rare.

Probably made by “Gottfried Uebel”.

It is quite the opposite of a Hofner 500/1 violin bass:

  • normal long scale - Hofner has short scale
  • single coil P90 style pickups - Hofner has humbucker
  • east Germany - Hofner is west Germany
  • bolt on Stauffer neck - Hofner has set neck
  • it has a proper big bass neck - Hofner 500/1 necks feel more like guitar necks…

The body got reeinforced with extra braces and a long 20mm dowel stick from end to neck block (before it gave in too much to string tension.)

The Simeto P90 pickups were waxed.

Frets were leveled, the neck is straight and a comfy action possible.

Also it got new Grover nickel tuners.

Specs: Nut width: 40,5 mmAction low E string at 12th fret: 3,5 mm Weight: 2,98 kgBody width: 36,5 cmBody depth: 4,8cmScale: 824 mm Shipping outside of EU can only be done with the neck off (I will add a 4mm key for the Stauffer screw).

The guitar is restored, set up and ready to play.
